My Tech Talk Topic: Artificial Intelligence!

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. Some of these tasks include visual perception, facial and voice recognition, language translation, and abilities to make decisions.

The core problems described in “Artificial Intelligence” by TechoPedia in regard to AI include programming computers for certain traits such as:

  • Knowledge
  • Reasoning
  • Problem solving
  • Perception
  • Learning
  • Planning
  • Ability to manipulate and move objects

Today, we can see many of these tasks being performed in devices such as phone and computers. For example, Siri from Apple is a built-in voice recognition program that listens to your commands and performs them at a relatively high accuracy. You can say things like “Call Tom”, “Go to Music” and even “Set an Alarm.” Additionally, these devices are also being designed to have facial recognition built into them.

The most recent example for facial recognition is the new Apple X. To unlock your device, it scans your face to make sure the owner of the device is the person accessing its functions. Language translation is another example of artificial intelligence that is has been seem more and more throughout technology advances. In the past, translators were used as a mediator between the two parties that were trying to communicate. In more recent times, we can translate full phrases and documents by simply using Google Translate or purchasing or downloading a translation program/application. For these technologies to perform at the level of human intelligence they must be designed to be able to analyze and decode a vast majority of data. For example, Google formulates algorithms that work to produce search results that are relevant to your search by using cookies, locations, and key words and content used within the website/page. To be able to produce the proper user request, Google must acquire lots of data.

AI is a very relevant in the business world because as you can see in the previous examples, companies are increasingly integrating more advanced technologies into their business plans to facilitate all business tasks. I chose this topic specifically because it is very interesting to see how this area of computer science has become an essential part of the technology industry. Now a day to be successful in the business world, a company must have systems and processes set in place to maintain efficiency and effectiveness.

Although AI has had positive impacts in the world, it has also raised a fear that technology will take up a lot of jobs that will eventually be done by machines or robots. As the article, “Artificial Intelligence in Business: The State of Play and Future Prospects” written by Charles McLellan states that technology advances have always eliminated some jobs and created others, leaving social change — in the form of displaced ‘legacy’ workers. This is something I also found interesting about AI as to what will happen to the labor force in the future.
